The new EU regulation aims to simplify and harmonize rules for telecommunications, but according to Renzo Ravaglia, CEO of FibreConnect, it risks strengthening major operators at the expense of local players. Among the key issues are the contribution of OTTs, the copper switch-off, connectivity quality, and the role of alternative technologies.
Next year, the Digital Networks Act (DNA) is expected to be issued, a European plan aimed at strengthening Europe’s telecommunications networks by halving the burdens on operators, simplifying regulations, and harmonizing them at the EU level. The goal is also to enhance existing networks, especially fiber networks, and give more power to operators, who today are partly disadvantaged compared to the Over The Top (OTT) players, mostly American tech giants (Google, AWS, Netflix, Disney+, DAZN) that rely on telecommunications networks without contributing financially to their development.
