Namex 2024: on a journey to new frontiers

7 June 2024 | News, Scenery and markets

Namex’s annual event, the #NAM2024.
This year it took place in an unusual and evocative setting: the Pietrarsa National Railway Museum in Naples.
A unique place rich in history, which hosted the event in its entirety.
In addition to being a very important meeting and networking moment for the entire telco sector in Italy, it is also a space for reflections and updates on the hottest topics of the moment This year the topic was the impact of new technological frontiers on the transformation of the digital economy: we live in an increasingly interconnected and digitized world, in which technological frontiers continue to evolve and expand.
Despite this, there is a part of the world that continues to be “disconnected,” thus isolated from the rest.
It is essential then, to understand how we can connect the isolated part of the world and make it interconnected with those who already have an Internet connection.

The challenges of TLC in 2024

What are the hottest topics regarding telecommunications in 2024?
What technologies and new technological frontiers are taking hold?
How important is cyber security?
These were just some of the questions that were attempted to be answered during panels at the event.

New challenges for AGCOM as well

Laura Aria, a member of the Communications Guarantee Authority, and Davide Gallino, Agcom director of studies and research, explained the change in recent years, which has influenced and reshaped the communications regulatory landscape.
The digital ecosystem is changing, and AGCCOM is evolving along with it, acquiring new competencies.
Two are the most recent regulations, such as ENFA, theEuropean Media Freedom Act , and the Artificial Intelligence Regulation.
We are in the era of global administrative law, which is dressed up in a technical nature.
AGCOM used to set prices and monitor the transparency of offerings in a variety of markets.
Today these markets have shrunk sharply.
The agency, which began as a media regulator, has evolved over time to assume its current role as “digital coordinator,” which, together with the antitrust and privacy watchdog, represents the new scenario.
This new role, with the cyber security agency, is the new frontier, with which it is coping with the changing digital ecosystems.

Three distinct markets: infrastructure, consumer and business

Investment in new technological frontiers is increasing and is set to grow further.
In 2024, the TLC market is divided into three main segments: the infrastructure market, the “mass market” (consumer) market, and the business entreprise market.

Telco power measured in megawatts

Today, the power of telcos is also measured in megawatts of data centers used, with an increase in connections and interconnections between devices near or far, as highlighted in the talks by Goretti and Luciani.
Compared to last year, Namex is growing in number of datacenters, number of networks (reaching 240), daily traffic and number of connections.

The New Technological Frontiers.

Maurizio Dècina, Giorgio Ventre and Stefano Pileri discussed the new technological frontiers that are contributing to the growth of the TLC market:

  • Radio (satellite – 6G): 5G is not yet fully implemented.
    When mid-range, sub-six and stand-alone networks, for example, are implemented, then the full power of 5G will really be unleashed, and this will mean that we will have to be ready for the arrival of 6G;
  • Optical Technology
  • Software (SDN, NFV, API MEC): if networks (equipment) become software and are implemented on computing technologies, we can talk about general purpose.
Software networks will then transform power plants into distributed data centers, and this will make a difference from what we see today.
    Networks will become programmable and API distribution will enable them to become platforms;
  • IoT
  • Cyber security
  • AI & ML (artificial intelligence and machine learning): how can AI implement network innovation?
    In 4 ways.

1) real-time network capacity management-from the analysis of network usage I can schedule and change the capacity setup, relying on AI algorithms.
2) maintenance-from the analysis of what is happening I can preemptively notice if something is happening and then change the network setup to prevent it.
3) customer care and customer care via chat bots.
4) marketing: it will be used to retain as many customers as possible more on their networks.   He then emphasizes how from each network element he curates the extraction of characteristic data in a constant and continuous manner.
Data that goes toward observability engines.
The analysis of this data, together with the algorithms that process it, generates commands that cannot be handled by operators.
Networks that become edge will be able; to be controlled by AI

  • AR & VR MULTI SENSING (sensors for augmented reality and virtual reality)
  • Quantum Computing

These technologies are evolving and are set to grow further, implanting themselves permanently and transforming the TLC market.

Artificial Intelligence: the most “talked about” technology

Of all these emerging technologies, the most talked about is undoubtedly AI.
There are many ways in which AI can improve and help telco companies.
It can manage network capacity in real time, support maintenance, take care of customers, and enhance all marketing-related activities of a company, thus improving business.

An ever-changing market

The telecommunications market is changing, evolving, and growing, and the process is not likely to stop.
It is therefore important to stay up-to-date and be ready for all the changes and innovations that will come.
The Namex annual meeting allowed us to compare, meet, and learn, strengthening the foundation for an increasingly connected future, thanks to technology.
