Digitization of businesses: data, analysis and trends

21 March 2024 | News

Digital is reshaping every aspect of our lives, especially in business. The trend is set to grow further in the coming years, thanks in part to technologies such as Artificial Intelligence or The Internet of Things, which are set to revolutionize the way we work and make companies and businesses increasingly tech-savvy.

According to theDESI index (2022), “only 55 percent of EU SMEs have at least a basic level of digitization.” The goal would be to reach at least 90 percent by 2030 with the implication that, apart from the 34 percent associated with the use of cloud computing, “the use of AI and Big Data by businesses stands at only 8 percent and 14 percent, respectively (goal of 75 percent by 2030).”

Also according to the DESI index (2023), the percentage of companies covered by FTTH networks has grown between 2019 and 2023: at the European level, the percentage has increased from 29.16 percent to 56.50 percent (it has practically doubled); at the Italian level, although it is slightly lower than the European level, it is still in line and also more than doubled (from 21.71 percent to 53.71 percent).

Digitization goals bode well thanks to growing trends: statistics from the Assintel report dedicated to the ICT and digital market, in fact, tell of significant increases in investment in technological endowments.

In the period between 2022 and 2024, the IT market is growing by 8.4 percent. This is absolutely positive and highlights the increased investment in the sector. The trend will remain positive, thanks in part to the latest technologies and the desire on the part of companies to want to increase the degree of digitization.

In fact, companies are facing accelerated digitization in recent years and are equipping themselves with modern technologies, which are replacing or complementing existing ones, such as, in addition to the aforementioned AI, the cloud, the Internet of Things and software to increase corporate cyber security.

On average, an enterprise uses at least five types of technologies, both more basic and more advanced or innovative. Fiber optics is a valuable support for the adoption of tools such as cloud and cybersecurity solutions. In addition, opting for the latest and emerging technologies allows the company to improve and stay ahead in a competitive and ever-changing market.

Not all areas in which a company decides to invest for business growth are affected in the same way. The main areas where there is a greater need for investment are mainly communication and marketing, but also customer management and sustainability.

Compared to 2023, companies will invest even more in digital in 2024, with a budget increase of 29 percent compared to 2023 (where the increase was, by contrast, 22 percent compared to 2022). Then there are the companies considered “dynamic” because they have invested more in digital in both 2023 and 2024.

Not all companies will reach the same level of digitization in the same way, but thanks to growing trends and increased investment in the coming years, work will become even more “digitized” and efficient.
